请求信 Letter of Request

请求信是对收信人提出请求,并希望对方满足该要求。写请求信的重点是要写清楚为什么要请求他人做某事,请求他人做某事的原因。

写请求信时首先要说明写作意图,一定要注意语气要礼貌,用词要规范;然后具体展开说明请求的原因;最后表示希望对方予以答复。

写作“三步走”:

介绍自己、提出请求—>说明原因及其它事项—>表达谢意、期盼答复

Tips:

1 请求策略类型

Searle,[3]Ervin-Tripp,[4]Blum-Kulka,[5]Blum-Kulka&House[6]的研究已经发现请求行为一般采用两种交际策略完成:直接策略和间接策略。但跨文化言语行为实现项目(CCSARP)就请求的间接程度进一步将请求策略分为九类:祈使句型,明晰施为型,模糊施为型,义务陈述型,意愿陈述型,建议表达型,询问型,强暗示,弱暗示。以上九种请求策略其间接程度逐渐加强,听话者推理过程和理解请求时所付出的努力也随之加强。Blum-Kullka和Weizman[5,7]又将上述九种策略分为三大类:直接策略,规约性间接策略和非规约性间接策略。该文所要重点研究的就是非规约性间接策略,即请求暗示。

2 请求暗示

暗示就其本质而言没有特定的句型,也没有特定的词汇,具有一定的模糊性和隐晦性,需要听话人在谈话中自己判断是不是请求行为,这在一定程度上就降低了请求的目的性。使用暗示表达请求时,说话人意欲听话人执行某种请求行为,首先得听话人意识到说话人的意图,但该意图的推理既非通过语言的字面意义也非通过语言的话语意义,而是通过说话人意义理解的。因此使用暗示策略时可能会出现的两个主要问题:第一,只有在某些特定的语境下话语才可能被认为是间接请求。第二,由于暗示内在的模糊性和隐晦型从而使得听话人不确定说话人的真正意图。例如:

①I love this chocolate and this chocolate is so expensive,I could never afford it.When used as requests that the hearer buy the chocolate for the speaker.

②Do you have any money on you?When used as a request for a loan.

以上两个例子均为请求暗示,只是间接的程度和暗示的方式不同,但其相似之处在于说话人和听话人都有选择拒绝的可能性,这种可能性是由暗示的间接性和形式的非规约性决定的。Dascal提出语言的间接性不仅由于使用生僻词和模糊指示造成缺乏一定程度的透明性,更由于说话人传递的意图并非语言的话语意义。[8]这种语言的话语意义和说话人意义之间的差别显然是解释间接语言和请求暗示的一个很好的切入点。[9]但听话人如何察觉这种意义之间的差别,又如何从字面意义和语言的话语意义推测出说话人的真正意图,并非是很容易推测出的。听话人只有相信说话人意欲表达的并非语言的话语意义,或不仅仅是话语意义,才可以将说话人的话语理解为请求暗示。暗示间接性的理解要求听话人作出详尽的推理过程。首先推断说话人所说话语的话语意义,其次根据上下文语境察觉出说话人所说话语的话语意义并非说话人意图,然后推测各种可能的话语意义,检查各种可能的话语意义是否与说话人的真实意图相符。说话人所说话语的话语意义与说话人真实意图之间的区别和空别,只有听话人根据语境线索按照上述步骤才能推测出说话人的真实意图。这正是暗示作为非规约性间接请求策略和规约性间接请求策略之间的区别。例如,说话人说“Can you pass me the salt,please?”听话人可以轻而易举地理解为一个请求,并不用经过冗长的推理过程。因为听话人可以根据典型的语法结构“can you/could you”及“Please”的语义推断该句型为规约性间接请求中的询问型。

在CCSARP研究体系中,请求暗示策略在形式上是最间接的也是最非规约的,因此请求暗示的理解既不能通过规约性也不能通过直接性。以下是几个典型的请示暗示的例子。

③The kitchen is in a mess.When used as a request to clean up the kitchen.

④You must have had a beautiful party.When used as a request to clean up the

kitchen the morning after.

以上所举的请求暗示的例子只有单独使用时才能被理解为请求暗示,如果它出现在规约性间接请求或直接请求之前或之后,均不能被理解为请求暗示,当使用在规约性请求之前或之后时,充当外部修饰,通常作规约性间接请求或直接请求的原因或理由。例如,

⑤The kitchen is in a terrible mess,could you please clean it up?

⑥Please clean up the kitchen.It really is in a terrible mess.

“The kitchen is in a mess”这一句子均出现在例(3),(5)与(6)中,但其在句子中充当的成分显然是不同的。该句在例(3)中做请求暗示,说话人没有明确提出请求,只是陈述当时的一个状态,听话人根据当时的语境线索与认知环境才有可能推测出说话人的真实意图是想让听话人打扫厨房。但是在例(5)与例(6)中,该句作外部修饰,起加强或减弱中心行为词的功能,也是对提出请求的解释。因此,请求暗示与直接请求或规约性间接请求中的外部修饰显然不同,尽管其具有一定的模糊性,但对于说话人而言已经足够有效地传达其真正的请求意图。因此,暗示的模糊性和隐晦性并不是请求的障碍和阻力,相反,在某种程度上暗示更能准确礼貌的表达说话人的请求,同时也易于被听话人接受。

3 言外模糊性与命题模糊性

Searle[3]把Austin[10]的言语行为理论进行了补充,认为在研究话语时应注意到一句话的命题内容和它的言外之力之间的关系,因此言语的模糊既可以是言外模糊也可以是命题模糊。言外模糊性是指话语意义对于理解其意欲的言外之力不能提供足够的信息,听话人只有借助于语境知识或意义协商才能理解其言外意图。命题模糊性是指句子意义对于理解该行为内容不能提供足够的信息,但其言外之力不一定必须是模糊的。在现实的言语交际中,我们所关注的这两种模糊类型的区别并不是截然划分的区别,而是一个言语行为更侧重于哪种类型。

3.1 言外模糊性

⑦Professor telephones room-permits office:

─Do you have a room for 20 on Monday nights?

─Just a minute.Yes,I do.Give me your name,department,and course number,please.

基于例(7)明显的话语意思,我们可以显然看出教授的问题是想询问信息,听话人判定自己的回答“Yes,I do”是不充分的,因此根据自己的常识及语境特征认为教授的询问属于请求策略中的暗示,教授的真正意图是想预定房间。也就是说,教授向酒店接线员提出的询问信息问题有请求预定房间的言外之力。因此,听话人在理解说话人所说话语时首先要假想其具有言外之力,然后根据自身的常识与语境特征来填补该空白,最后确定说话人的话语是否真正具有言外之力。通常状况下,听话人一般采取语境线索或意义协商来确定话语的言外之力。

3.2 命题模糊性

绝对的命题模糊性几乎是不存在的。一个命题内容的主要组成成份是:请求行为动作;执行请求动作时听话人的参与以及请求动作间接相关或以其他方式相关的成份,如执行请求动作的方式,执行请求动作的对象及受益人等。[1]因此,如果说话人为了自己的利益让听话人通过某种方式执行请求动作,那么其命题组成成份就是:请求动作,执行请求动作时听话人的参与以及受益人。因此,在执行直接请求时,如“Please clean up the kitchen for me”,其命题组成成份就是明确提到的请求动作“clean up”;在执行请求动作时听话人的参与(第二人称“you clean up”);和两个相关的组成成份:打扫的对象(“kitchen”)和请求动作的受益人(“for me”)。但是在执行请求暗示时,如“The kitchen is in a mess.”,句中没有明确提到请求动作(“cleaning”),也未提及说话人或受益人。只明确提到了打扫的对象(“kitchen”)和当时的状态(“being in a mess”)。通过比较,我们可以发现请求暗示作为非常规间接请求较之直接请求会不同程度的省略命题内容的组成成份。这将会增加命题的模糊性,同时也会影响说话人对请求命题的理解过程。

4 结束语

综上所述,暗示作为非规约性间接请求策略,由于其内在的模糊性和隐晦型,听话人在理解过程中不得不根据语境线索或认知环境来推测说话人的真实意图。因此,使用暗示这种间接请求策略具有一定的风险性,因为听话人可能意识不到或推测不出说话人的真实意图。但同时又由于其间接性,一方面可以含蓄礼貌有策略地提出请求,另一方面又不会威胁听话人的面子,又不失为一种好的请求策略。

摘要:间接言语行为一直是语用学研究的热点话题,不少理论对其进行阐述过。间接言语行为能否被听话人理解,将直接或间接地影响着人们的交流。该文在跨文化言语行为实现项目(CCSARP)的基础上,从间接性和模糊性的角度来探讨非规约性间接请求策略即请求暗示的使用。目的在于揭示出影响暗示理解的因素和使用暗示策略时可能会出现的问题,以及如何解决这些问题,从而帮助英语学习者更好的学习和使用请求暗示策略。
