1.1 The Author

The author Frances Hodgson Burnett, born in Manchester, England on November 24, 1849, is a famous female writer.Born as a daughter of a successful hardware merchant, she lived an affluent life in the first severa years of her childhood.Yet, as the father died when Burnett was at the age of four, the family turned impoverished. In 1865 the Burnetts moved to Tennessee in America, where in spite of the financial support from an uncle, they lived a hard life.So Burnett, at the age of 18, attempted to cover family expenses by writing. Two years after that, her mother went to meet her father, and by then, Burnett’s remuneration by contribution had become the pillar source of family income.During her lifetime Burnet married twice, of which both were unhappy.Yet, her miserable marriage life and her children gave her much inspiration to conceive wonderfu works, among which her children’s books gained her repution as a novelist, including The Secret Garden (1888) and Sara Crew (later rewritten to become:A Little Princess) (1909) , which are best known today.

1.2 A Little Princess

The book is popular all the time so that it was adapted twice and moved onto screen. In 1939, A Little Princess was adapted into a movie with the famous child movie star Sherley Temper as the acting of Sara which made this book most popular and famous than it was at any time in the world, and it has been translated in many different languages in the world. The writer Burnett thus gained the reputation home and aboard And in 1995 the film was directed by Alfonso Cuarón based upon the novel. This adaptation was heavily influenced by the 1939 cinematic version with Shirley Temple and took great liberties with the original story The action was moved to New York during World War I.

2. Sara’Charms

2.1 Sara’s rich imagination

Children have more imaginative power than adults, yet Sara’s imagination is richer than average children. She pretends to be a real princess all the time, even when she is in rags and lives in the badconditioned attic. Her extraordinary imaginative power benefits her in two ways. One is what makes her a good story-teller.She has the ability to indulge herself in her own imagined world and vividly tells other pupils stories as if she herself is experiencing it, which wins her a lot admiration. The other is that her imagination helps her put up with difficulties and hardships and cling to a positive belief to life. This point can be seen in two incidents. The first one is in Chapter13.It was a typical wretched winter day.Though she had been starved for a long time, Sara was sent on an errand as usual.Snow melted and combined itself with mud to form slush, which wettened little Sara’s clothes and shoes. She was dismayed, but her rich imagination wasn’t impaired by the wicked weather.“‘Suppose I had dry clothes on, ’she thought.‘Suppose I had good shoes and a long, thick coat and merino stockings and a whole umbrella. And suppose—suppose—just when I was near a baker’s where they sold hot buns, I should find sixpence—which belonged to nobody.Suppose, if I did, I should go into the shop and buy six of the hottest buns and eat them all without stopping.’”God didn’t let her down.Odd things happened as she had wished.A four-penny piece was lying on the mud.Having made sure nobody would come and claim it, she went to the baker’s and bought buns with it to alleviate her hunger.

Life is not always a plain sailing.Wax and wane is commonplace. As most of us are confined in the concrete jungle, we hardly have place such as a grove to release high workload pressure. When we’re blue, we need imagination to comfort us, if not bring us material encouragement, at leas mentally make us strong. We need it, just as great Chinese writer Lu Xun named it“A Q Spirit”.Besides, imagining for the good brings pleasure and you have no idea who and when will fall in love with your smile. There is a great possibility that your smile brings you good luck.

2.2 Sara’s sympathy with the poor and inferior

Ermengarde isn’t poor in money. On the contrary, her family is rich enough to afford to educate her in Miss Minchin’s school.Much books as she possesses, she is poor in knowledge. She is slow to her age.She makes mistakes in French class. She suffers a lot from others’teasing. All o that is observed by careful Sara.Sara doesn’t laugh at Ermengarde bu comes to her to comfort her, offering to help her with French, at which Sara is pretty good.Consequently, Ermengarde makes progress not only in French but in other aspects, for Sara would read the books Ermengarde hates and then tell her what it’s about.Along with knowledge, they both obtain a precious friendship.Sara’s sympathy can be embodied in another incident, her encountering with a starving girl scrunching in the corner of street.Sara is lucky that day to spot a coin lying on the ground Have making sure nobody would come and claim it, she buys six buns with the coin.Actually, that six buns worth more. The shop owner is sympathetic to her at the sight of how weak and hungry she is, so she gives Sara more than the coin can buy.As Sara is ready to taste the feast, she sees a rover in the corner, starving and freezing.Out of sympathy, she gives the pun one by one to the rover, watching with smile the rover gulping down five puns as if the puns have gone into her own stomach Sara leaves only one of the total six puns for herself. How generous!

Suppose you were Sara, can you do what she has done?Even we now live an affluent life, some people are reluctant to donate their used clothes to the poor.Even we now are robust persons, some of us are unwilling to donate blood to the ill-healthed.It’s difficult for us to do so even in our best times, not to mention in our worst times. What a great child Sara is compared to some of us!

2.3 Sara’s tolerance

It’s children’s nature to be arrogant and overbearing.Their behavior is completely controlled by their inner thoughts. They’ve no idea how to hide true feelings. But Sara is more mature than her age with extraordinary patience.Even sometimes the humiliation from Miss Minchin and Lavinia was beyond endurance, she never broke out, and seldom retorted.Yet her silence was overwhelming, which sometimes frightened spiteful people like Miss Minchin, just as described in the book“Sara had always been an annoying puzzle to her, because severity never made her cry or look frightened. When she was scolded she stood still and listened politely with a grave face;when she was punished she performed her extra tasks or went without her meals, making no complaint or outward sign of rebellion. The very fact that she never made and impudent answer seemed to Miss Minchin a kind of impudence in itself.”

If everyone, especially teenagers, has that merit of Sara, crime rate in our society will surely decrease.According to statistics, 57%of the juvenile delinquency is caused by impulse. It’s said that impulse is a devil, which seduces men to commit crime. Most criminals got barred merely because they were not tolerant enough, so crimes were made out o trivial conflicts.Recalling what they had done, not one of them wasn’regreful for their unwise impulse.

3. Conclusion

Seen from any aspect, Sara is a real princess that can behave gracefully like a princess even in adverse surroundings. When she loses both riches and father, other people begin to change the attitude to her Yet, she relies on her imaginative power to make her brain full while the body is hungry. She still befriends with animals when some spiteful people refuse to accept her.Her sympathy with the inferior and the poor wins her permanent friends which accompany her though hardships. And her extraordinary tolerance keeps her enemies distance with her. This is the soul and the essence in this book.Sara’s charm not only brings the magic power to herself, but also influences readers home and abroad for generations.
