today we are launching a campaign called “he for she.”
i am reaching out to you because i need your help.we want to end gender inequality—andto do that we need everyone to be involved.this is the first campaign of its kind at the un: we want to try and galvanize as manymen and boys as possible to be advocates for gender equality.and we don’t just want to talk about it, but make sure it is tangible.i was appointed six months ago and the more i have spoken about feminism, the more i have realized that fighting for women’s rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating.if there is one thing i know for certain, it is that this has to stop.for the record, feminism by definition is: “the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.it is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes.”
i started questioning gender-based assumptions when at eight i was confused at being called “bossy,” because i wanted to direct the plays we would put on for our parents—but the boys were not.when at 14, i started being sexualized by certain elements of the press.when at 15, my girlfriends started dropping out of their sports teams because they didn’t want to appear “muscly.”
when at1 8, my male friends were unable to express their feelings.i decided i was a feminist and this seemed uncomplicated to me.but my recent research has shown me that feminism has become an unpopular word.apparently, i am among the ranks of women whose expressions are seen as too strong, too aggressive, isolating, anti-men and, unattractive.why is the word such an uncomfortable one?
i am from britain and think it is right that as a woman i am paid the same as my male counterparts.i think it is right that i should be able to make decisions about my own body.i think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decision-making of my country.i thinkit is right that socially i am afforded the same respect as men.but sadly i can say that there is no one country in the world where all women can expect to receive these rights.no country in the world can yet say they have achieved gender rights i consider to be human rights but i am one of the lucky ones.my life is a sheer privilege because my parents didn’t love me less because i was born a daughter.my school did not limit me because i was a girl.my mentors didn’t assume i would go less far because i might give birth to a child one day.these influencers were the gender equality ambassadors that made who i am today.they may not know it, but they are the inadvertent feminists who are.and we need more of those.and if you still hate the word—it is not the word that is important but the idea and the ambition behind it.because not all women have been afforded the same rights that i have.in fact, statistically, very few have been.in 1997, hilary clinton made a famous speech in beijing about women’s rights.sadly many of the things she wanted to change are still a reality today.but what stood out for me the most was that only 30 percent of her audience were male.how can we affect change in the world when only half of it is invited or feel welcome to participate in the conversation?
men—i would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation.gender equality is your issue too.because today, i’ve seen my father’s role as a parent being valued less by society despite my needing his presence as a child as much as my mother’s.i’ve seen young men suffering from mental illness unable to ask for help for fear itwould make them look less “macho”—in fact in the uk suicide is the biggest killer of men between 20-49;eclipsing road accidents, cancer and coronary heart disease.i’ve seen men made fragile and insecure by a distorted sense of what constitutes male success.men don’t have the benefits of equality either.we don’to ften talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes but i can see that that they are and that when they are free, things will change for women as anatural consequence.if men don’t have to be aggressive in order to be accepted women won’t feel compelled to be submissive.if men don’t have to control, women won’t have to be controlled.both men and women should feel free to be sensitive.both men and women should feel free to be strong… it is time that we all perceive gender on a spectrum not as twoopposing sets of ideals.if we stop defining each other by what we are not and start defining ourselves by what we are—we can all be freer and this is what heforshe is about.it’s about freedom.i want men to take up this mantle.so their daughters, sisters and mothers can be free from prejudice but also so that their sons have permission to be vulnerable and human too—reclaim those parts of themselves they abandoned and in doing so be amore true and complete version of themselves.you might be thinking who is this harry potter girl? and what is she doing up on stage atthe un.it’s a good question and trust me i have been asking myself the samething.i don’t know if i am qualified to be here.all i know is that i care about this problem.and i want to make it better.and having seen what i’ve seen—and given the chance—i feel it is my duty to say something.english statesman edmund burke said: “all that is needed for the forces of evilto triumph is for enough good men and women to do nothing.”
in my nervousness for this speech and in my moments of doubt i’ve told myself firmly—if not me, who, if not now, when.if you have similar doubts when opportunities are presented to you i hope those words might be helpful.because the reality is that if we do nothing it will take 75 years, or for me to be nearlya hundred before women can expect to be paid the same as men for the same million girls will be married in the next 16 years as children.and at current rates it won’t be until 2086 before all rural african girls will be able to receive a secondary education.if you believe in equality, you might be one of those inadvertent feminists i spoke ofearlier.and for this i applaud you.we are struggling for a uniting word but the good news is we have a uniting movement.it is called heforshe.i am inviting you to step forward, to be seen to speakup, to be the he for she.and to ask yourself if not me, who, if not now when.thank you.
女权主义英文演讲稿 第2篇
The Truman Doctrine speech by Harry S Truman
Mr.President, Mr.Speaker, Members of the Congress of the United States. The gravity of the situation which confronts the world today necessitates my appearance before a joint session of the Congress. The foreign policy and the national security of this country are involved. One aspect of the present situation, which I present to you at this time for your consideration and decision, concerns Greece and Turkey. The United States has received from the Greek Government an urgent appeal for financial and economic assistance.Preliminary reports from the American Economic Mission now in Greece corroborate the statement of the Greek Government that assistance is imperative if Greece is to survive as a free nation.I do not believe that the American people and the Congress wish to turn a deaf ear to the appeal of the Greek Government.Greece is not a rich country.Lack of sufficient natural resources has always forced the Greek people to work hard to make both ends meet.Since 1940, this industrious, peace loving country has suffered invasion, four years of cruel enemy occupation, and bitter internal strife. When forces of liberation entered Greece they found that the retreating Germans had destroyed virtually all the railways, roads, port facilities, communications, and merchant marine.More than a thousand villages had been burned.Eighty-five percent of the children were tubercular.Livestock, poultry, and draft animals had almost disappeared.Inflation had wiped out practically all savings. As a result of these tragic conditions, a militant minority, exploiting human want and misery, was able to create political chaos which, until now, has made economic recovery impossible.Greece is today without funds to finance the importation of those goods which are essential to bare subsistence.Under these circumstances the people of Greece cannot make progress in solving their problems of reconstruction.Greece is in desperate need of financial and economic assistance to enable it to resume purchases of food, clothing, fuel and seeds. These are indispensable for the subsistence of its people and are obtainable only from abroad.Greece must have help to import the goods necessary to restore internal order and security so essential for economic and political recovery. The Greek Government has also asked for the assistance of experienced American administrators, economists and technicians to insure that the financial and other aid given to Greece shall be used effectively in creating a stable and self-sustaining economy and in improving its public administration. The very existence of the Greek state is today threatened by the terrorist activities of several thousand armed men, led by Communists, who defy the government’s authority at a number of points, particularly along the northern boundaries.A Commission appointed by the United Nations Security Council is at present investigating disturbed conditions in northern Greece and alleged border violations along the frontier between Greece on the one hand and Albania, Bulgaria, and Yugoslavia on the other.Meanwhile, the Greek Government is unable to cope with the situation. The Greek army is small and poorly equipped. It needs supplies and equipment if it is to restore authority to the government throughout Greek territory.Greece must have assistance if it is to become a self-supporting and self-respecting democracy. The United States must supply this assistance. We have already extended to Greece certain types of relief and economic aid but these are inadequate. There is no other country to which democratic Greece can turn.No other nation is willing and able to provide the necessary support for a democratic Greek government. The British Government, which has been helping Greece, can give no further financial or economic aid after March 31.Great Britain finds itself under the necessity of reducing or liquidating its commitments in several parts of the world, including Greece. We have considered how the United Nations might assist in this crisis. But the situation is an urgent one requiring immediate action, and the United Nations and its related organizations are not in a position to extend help of the kind that is required. It is important to note that the Greek Government has asked for our aid in utilizing effectively the financial and other assistance we may give to Greece, and in improving is public administration. It is of the utmost importance that we supervise the use of any funds made available to Greece, in such a manner that each dollar spent will count toward making Greece self-supporting, and will help to build an economy in which a healthy democracy can flourish. No government is perfect. One of the chief virtues of a democracy, however, is that its defects are always visible and under democratic processes can be pointed out and corrected. The government of Greece is not perfect.Nevertheless it represents 85 percent of the members of the Greek Parliament who were chosen in an election last year.Foreign observers, including 692 Americans, considered this election to be a fair expression of the views of the Greek people. The Greek Government has been operating in an atmosphere of chaos and extremism. It has made mistakes. The extension of aid by this country does not mean that the United States condones everything the Greek Government has done or will do.We have condemned in the past, and we condemn now, extremist measures of the right or the left.We have in the past advised tolerance, and we advise tolerance now.Greece’s neighbour, Turkey, also deserves our attention. The future of Turkey as an independent and economically sound state is clearly no less important to the freedom-loving peoples of the world than the future of Greece. The circumstances in which Turkey finds itself today are considerably different from those of Greece.Turkey has been spared the disasters that have beset Greece. And during the war, the United States and Great Britain furnished Turkey with material aid.Nevertheless, Turkey now needs our support.Since the war Turkey has sought additional financial assistance from Great Britain and the United States for the purpose of effecting that modernization necessary for the maintenance of its national integrity. That integrity is essential to the preservation of order in the Middle East. The British Government has informed us that, owing to its own difficulties, it can no longer extend financial or economic aid to Turkey. As in the case of Greece, if Turkey is to have the assistance it needs, the United States must supply it.We are the only country able to provide that help.I am fully aware of the broad implications involved if the United States extends assistance to Greece and Turkey, and I shall discuss these implications with you at this time. One of the primary objectives of the foreign policy of the United States is the creation of conditions in which we and other nations will be able to work out a way of life free from coercion. This was a fundamental issue in the war with Germany and Japan. Our victory was won over countries which sought to impose their will, and their way of life, upon other nations. To ensure the peaceful development of nations, free from coercion, the United States has taken a leading part in establishing the United Nations. The United Nations is designed to make possible lasting freedom and independence for all its members. We shall not realize our objectives, however, unless we are willing to help free peoples to maintain their free institutions and their national integrity against aggressive movements that seek to impose upon them totalitarian regimes. This is no more than a frank recognition that totalitarian regimes imposed upon free peoples, by direct or indirect aggression, undermine the foundations of international peace and hence the security of the United States. The peoples of a number of countries of the world have recently had totalitarian regimes forced upon them against their will. The Government of the United States has made frequent protests against coercion and intimidation, in violation of the Yalta Agreement, in Poland, Rumania, and Bulgaria.I must also state that in a number of other countries there have been similar developments. At the present moment in world history nearly every nation must choose between alternative ways of life. The choice is too often not a free one.One way of life is based upon the will of the majority, and is distinguished by free institutions, representative government, free elections, guarantees of individual liberty, freedom of speech and religion, and freedom from political oppression. The second way of life is based upon the will of a minority forcibly imposed upon the majority. It relies upon terror and oppression, a controlled press and radio, fixed elections, and the suppression of personal freedoms.I believe that it must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures.I believe that we must assist free peoples to work out their own destinies in their own way.I believe that our help should be primarily through economic and financial aid which is essential to economic stability and orderly political processes. The world is not static, and the status quo is not sacred. But we cannot allow changes in the status quo in violation of the Charter of the United Nations by such methods as coercion, or by such subterfuges as political infiltration. In helping free and independent nations to maintain their freedom, the United States will be giving effect to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations. It is necessary only to glance at a map to realize that the survival and integrity of the Greek nation are of grave importance in a much wider situation. If Greece should fall under the control of an armed minority, the effect upon its neighbour, Turkey, would be immediate and serious.Confusion and disorder might well spread throughout the entire Middle East. Moreover, the disappearance of Greece as an independent state would have a profound effect upon those countries in Europe whose people are struggling against great difficulties to maintain their freedoms and their independence while they repair the damages of war.It would be an unspeakable tragedy if these countries, which have struggled so long against overwhelming odds, should lose that victory for which they sacrificed so much.Collapse of free institutions and loss of independence would be disastrous not only for them but for the world.Discouragement and possible failure would quickly be the lot of neighbouring peoples striving to maintain their freedom and independence.Should we fail to aid Greece and Turkey in this fateful hour, the effect will be far reaching to the West as well as to the East.We must take immediate and resolute action.I therefore ask the Congress to provide authority for assistance to Greece and Turkey in the amount of $400,000,000 for the period ending June 30, 1948.In requesting these funds, I have taken into consideration the maximum amount of relief assistance which would be furnished to Greece out of the $350,000,000 which I recently requested that the Congress authorize for the prevention of starvation and suffering in countries devastated by the war.In addition to funds, I ask the Congress to authorize the detail of American civilian and military personnel to Greece and Turkey, at the request of those countries, to assist in the tasks of reconstruction, and for the purpose of supervising the use of such financial and material assistance as my be furnished.I recommend that authority also be provided for the instruction and training of selected Greek and Turkish personnel. Finally, I ask that the Congress provide authority which will permit the speediest and most effective use, in terms of needed commodities, supplies, and equipment, of such funds as may be authorized. If further funds, or further authority, should be needed for the purposes indicated in this message, I shall not hesitate to bring the situation before the Congress. On this subject the Executive and Legislative branches of Government must work together. This is a serious course upon which we embark.I would not recommend it except that the alternative is much more serious. The United States contributed $341,000,000,000 toward winning World War II.This is an investment in world freedom and world peace. The assistance that I am recommending for Greece and Turkey amounts to little more than 1/10 of 1 percent of this investment. It is only common sense that we should safeguard this investment and make sure that it was not in vain. The seeds of totalitarian regimes are nurtured by misery and want. They spread and grow in the evil soil of poverty and strife. They reach their full growth when the hope of a people for a better life has died.We must keep that hope alive. The free peoples of the world look to us for support in maintaining their freedoms. If we falter in our leadership, we may endanger the peace of the world – and we shall surely endanger the welfare of this Nation.Great responsibilities have been placed upon us by the swift movement of events.I am confident that the Congress will face these responsibilities squarely.

1 Introduction
Jane Austen is a very great English woman writer in the 18th century, and also an important representative in the history of English realistic novels.Though she has written so many famous novels, her controversial novel Emma has been the most attractive.Because in this novel Austen modeled an imperfect heroine, and the character is considered to be the miniature of the writer in real life. But in fact, most readers and critics have given sympathy and love to the heroine Emma.David Lodge stated in his introduction that Emma was the last completely finished product of Austen’s maturity.Of all her works, this one was regarded as the most representative and successful novel.[1]
In China, Emma has been introduced for many years, but the study about this novel has just begun recently. In 1990s, research papers mainly focus on the irony in this novel, but recently, the major study are about the marriage and feminist consciousness of Emma.Emma is the most mature work of Jane Austen and it is a representative work which can reflect her feminist consciousness deeply.”Luo Shenglan from Jilin Normal University analyzes Emma in a totally different way, she thinks that Emma is an imperfect image;the protagonist has many blemish and weakness in her character. As a charming, rich, clever girl, Emma has a very strong desire for controlling Harriet;she imposes her thoughts and wills on others, thus, she disturbs the life of Harriet, and makes the girl a poor puppet.[2]
In my paper, I mainly discuss how the protagonist fights for her own fate, seeks for her true love and becomes a brave woman.I think the marriage and character will be very helpful for us to deep understand the work.Emma plays a very important role in English literature, pushing the Feminism in development.
2 Feminism in Jane Austen’s Emma
The feminist thought of the author is reflected through the two heroines in the novel. In this part, I will analyze the feminist thought from the following aspects:two heroines’marriage and characters.
2.1 Characters of two heroines
The most direct way of analyzing feminine consciousness in this novel is through female characters. So in this part, the author will analyze feminism consciousness from the character of Jane Fairfax and Emma. From this figure, readers may feel more real than Emma, because she is a common person who has to take her financial condition into consideration. In such situation, the author shows readers the common women’s feminism consciousness, and the author’s feminist thought are also fully showed in the description.
2.1.1 Jane Fairfax
Jane Fair Fairfax is an important role in Emma, so it is significant to analyze the character of Jane Fairfax, which will help readers to know her feminism consciousness. In most ways, Jane Fairfax is similar to Emma, however, she has no financial independence like Emma, as a result, she has more difficulties than Emma when she chooses to uphold her character and keep her feminism consciousness. The figure Jane Fairfax is created by Austin in order to comprehensively show the feminism consciousness in different women who have different social status. And with the different social status, they hold their feminism consciousness. Finally, she and Emma solve their cloudy confusion and become friends.
2.1.2 Emma
The narrator shows us a lucky and beautiful Emma at the beginning of this novel“handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy dispositions, ”Some cementers claims that Emma“had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her.”[8]However, we can learn from the novel that Emma is a very unyielding girl;she has a strong will to make people obey her and never adopt others’advice.Maybe, this is a blemish character of the perfect protagonist.Emma still has something that can’t be adapted by everyone though as an admirable girl.
Emma makes three major mistakes. The first one is that she tries to make Harriet becomes the wife of a gentleman, but Harriet’s social status indicates that she would better suited to the farmer who loves her.And then, she flirts with Frank Churchill though she doesn’t love him.And she makes unjust comments about Jane Fairfax along the way. What’s worse is that she has not realized that she is in love and wants to marry Mr.Knightley.These mistakes heavily influence Harriet’s happiness, rouse Emma’s embarrassment and also form obstacles to Emma’s own achievement of her true love. Moreover, none of them realizes the consequences. In the novel, Knightley always corrects and guides Emma. When marrying Knightley, Emma signals that her judgment has aligned with his.
2.2 Marriages of heroines
From the marriage of Emma and Jane Fairfax, we can find their feminism consciousness. And from the above two, the author’s feminist thought are reflected in her work.At the time of marriage, social customs esteemed men in active pursuit of the situation, the pursuit of women's status of being restrained.[5]In Jane Austen’s time, in regard to married women, their activities were mostly confined within the narrow domestic world and were instructed to be“the angel in the house”.Since women got married, their opportunities for self-assertion were severely restricted.A women’s life must be centered on the home, and her main responsibilities should involve“contributing daily and hourly to the comfort of husbands of parents of brothers and sisters...”[6]Even within the narrow domestic world.Women were expected to be subservient and obedient to their husbands and of service to their children.
2.2.1 Jane Fairfax
From Jane Fairfax’s attitude to marriage, readers can find out her feminism consciousness. The girl gives us a big surprise, when she first appeared in Hartfeild, many people showed their great interest to this beautiful, gentle, versatile girl. Her life experience is a legend for people in Hatfeild.Though she is a poor girl without noble social status, people still love her.
From my point of view, Miss Fairfax is a very brave girl, she wasn’t afraid of social customs and people’s prejudice. She can pursue what she wants without caring about other’s opinions. As a Woman in that age, she had her own mind and thought;it expounds the girl’s feminist consciousness perfectly.
2.2.2 Emma
At the beginning, Emma has a determined concept that she will never enter into marriage. However, finally, she marries Mr.Knightley.So her marriage reflects her change of feminism consciousness and her growth of thought, which also reflect the feminist thought of Austen through the description to Emma and her marriage.Emma is a woman who has feminism consciousness. So she despises the marriage value of the female at that time. She thinks she can control her own life but not through her husband. From Emma’s marriage attitude, readers can easily feel her feminism consciousness.
But Emma matchmaker to Harriet and let Harriet pursuit Elton strongly in actively, so Harriet has to give up housekeeper Martin.Although Martin is the most suitable for Harriet in which demand for Mr.Elton portrait for her and make puzzle set, when there has been advised Elton sick to visit her.But Elton does like Harriet, his love is Emma. This relationship soon ended in failure, fell in love with Harriet, Mr.Knightley, Emma has a self-righteous judge to push the Harriet to Frank Churchill. When Harriet finally speaks out her mind to Emma that she loves Knightley.Emma noticed that she loves Mr.Knightley too.Emma shows us the image of her strong feminist consciousness, and value as human beings to pursue and defend the spirit of love.
3 Conclusion
Emma is the real reflection of Jane Austen;it expounds the author’s thoughts and minds perfectly. In that age, women were under the pressure of patriarchal society, thus producing the feminist consciousness, and it is the production of that time.Jane Austen attached her advanced mind to Emma, from the protagonist’s attitude to life, we can know about Austen well.Emma has some bad characters which are formed by the noble education, but under the lead of Mr.Knightley, she becomes a perfect woman gradually. The novel models a woman with strong feminist consciousness;it is very early for the process of human development, and causes significant effect to society.
Emma is a pride, confident girl, she is eager to change everyone in her own way, she can’t accept other’s advice and never be disturbed by others, for she thought she is totally right, but when she realize her fault, she can change herself and examine her own errors, this is a luminous point in this novel. From the marriage of Emma, we can also find her feminist consciousness. At first, she doesn’t advocate marriage, she thinks that women should change by themselves, but not by the marriage or their husband, women are not a part of men, they are independent individuality, so she believes that she will never get married. At last, when she realizes that she fell in love with Mr.Knightley, she is brave enough to reverse her thoughts and pursue her own happiness.
