全书从几个方面具体的阐述了语体学的方方面面。整本书共分为五章,分别从五个不同的方面进行概述。第一部分阐述语体学的产生、发展及其自身的性质。第二部分研究各民族性别、以及不同团体的语言。第三部分研究不同语境下产生的语言变体,其中包括正是与非正式语体,口头与书面语体以及俚语。第四部分从地域方面研究语体学。第五部分以语言功能为基础详细探讨了广告、法律、宗教、科技、新闻和演讲的语言特征及其功能。

以上五部分从宏观角度论述了语体学。例如“地域变体”一章,作者给我们介绍了全球范围的不同种英语,我们称之为不同的英语变体(英式英语、美式英语、中美英语、澳洲英语、非洲英语)的成因。并且作者借助丰富的语言材料,运用分类法和比较法从语音、语调方面重点分析了英式英语和美式英语。此外,作者还详细介绍了英式英语和美式英语的不同方言。

1 黑人英语与标准英语的异同点

1)词汇

众所周知,美国是一个大熔炉式的国家,它包括非洲裔黑人,亚洲裔黄种人,澳洲裔白种人等多种人种构成的移民大军。其中黑人已经成为美国最大的少数民族,他们的祖先在很早的时候来到美国,没有经济地位和人身自由,是美国的奴隶。为了与奴隶主和奴隶交际,黑奴和黑奴的后代不得不使用一种混合的语言“借词”。现在幸存下来的借词有gumbo(秋葵嫩叶做成的浓汤)、Okra(一种蔬菜名)、Hoodoo(一种咒语)等。那里的黑人们孕育了这些词汇,如nittygritty指事情的真相,Let't get down to the nittygritty(让我们正式严酷的现实)这句话在20世纪60年代用的相当多,表示对宗教歧视的不满和反抗。总之,黑人英语大多数词汇和规则通用于黑人英语和普通英语。

2)语法

语法结构方面黑人英语与普通英语的根本区别所在。黑人英语中词尾“s”经常丧失。词尾“s”的变化也是一种语法现象。例如passed发音与pass相同,于是词尾变化便消失了。再比如,黑人英语中的he eat,the dog leg的表达式正确的,与标准英语相比一个少了第三人称单数s,但它用来表达复数,另一个少了所属格S,也用来表示复数,这叫做词尾辅音连缀的简化。名词所有格和第三人称单数动词加“s”的词尾都消失了。

3)发音

比如,齿龈音可以省略。当两个辅音连续出现并且其中有一个是齿龈音的时候,黑人英语将省略齿龈音,如在passed和past的发音中省去词尾d和t两个词都变成了和pass一样的音,还有mend读成men,wasp读成was。

当然在S词尾变化的丧失不尽相同。有的黑人英语使用者,不仅在第三人称单数后加S,而且在所有词后加“S”。例如,电影《乱世佳人》中黑人佣人碧西的一段话:“I knows I knows Iknows how to do it.I've done it lots and lots,let me Doctor,le me,I can do everything.这些词尾的“S”不再是第三人称单数,而是一般现在时。

2 系动词

在黑人英语中,省略系动词是一个十分独特的句法特点,在使用这一特点时一定要谨慎守规。

1)进行时态中佐助动词用的be可省略。例如,I leav-ing......

2)在标准英语中,BE可以以缩略形式出现的地方,黑人英语的BE也可省略。例如:普通英语:He's full.黑人英语:He full.但是,黑人英语中并不是所有情况都可以省略BE动词的。如:动词BE出现在末尾不能省略;疑问句中的BE不能省略;过去时态中BE不能省略。

3)ain't广泛的用于构造否定句。当谓语不是行为动词时,ain't毫无例外地用于否定句,例如:I ain't afraid of nothing,He ain't coming back.

普通英语:He doesn't know any.

黑人英语:He don't know nothing.

3 结束语

语言是文化的载体,作为美式英语的特殊变体黑人英语,黑人文化蕴含着黑人的发展历史,这其中充满着无数黑人的血和泪,包含了无数黑人的奋斗史。对于母语为非英语的英语学者来说,如果想要了解或研究黑人英语,就必须在语音的发音,语法的结构等方面有充足的认识了解,也只有这样才能更深入的了解美国黑人社会。否则我们在欣赏黑人文学或者理解黑人的人文环境是就会有很大的障碍和误解。当然,在与黑人交流和沟通时就会有很大的难度。

一、对英语语言文学教学目标的认识

根据英语语言文学教学的实际情况,可以把英语语言文学课程的教学目标分为五个层次。首先是关于英语语言文学原著的阅读体验。其重心是培养学生对英美文学经典作品的欣赏和判断能力,增加必要的阅读体验,开阔眼界。其次,学习英美文学的基础知识,这一层次的重心是让学生了解英美文学史的发展及重要的文学现象。第三,英美文学批评理论和方法的介绍。这就要求教师帮助学校掌握文学批评的基本知识和分析方法,进而提高学生的思辨能力。第四,学生应当认识英美文化,教师引导学生拓展其文化视野和思想疆域,进而培养学生的跨文化交际意识。最后,英语语言文学教学应当教会学生感悟人生、培养他们的人文主义情怀。

二、《老人与海》中主人公圣地亚哥人物形象浅析

小说《老人与海》讲述了一位古巴老渔夫圣地亚哥独自出海捕鱼,但接连打了84天,却一条鱼也没捕到。当到了第85天的时候他终于钓到了一条大马哈鱼,但在返程路上,不幸受到许多鲨鱼的袭击,历经艰辛才回到陆地。总的来说,渔夫的性格特征包含了慈祥如父、良善如友;拥抱自然、不懈抗争;独有的沟通方式、丰富细腻的内心世界等。

(一)与他人——慈祥如父、良善如友

在小说中,一个叫曼诺林的小男孩总是陪伴着圣地亚哥,从他们的交往中,可以深深的体会到圣地亚哥如慈父般的柔情。曼诺林从五岁就跟随圣地亚哥一起捕鱼,老人悉心照料他并教给他了许多捕鱼技巧和知识,同时身体力行也教给曼诺林很多做人道理。曼诺林拿来了别人送他的食物,圣地亚哥都要一再表示感谢。圣地亚哥不仅对曼诺林很慈祥同时对别人也很友善,即使对飞鸟、鱼儿和大海等生物和大自然都有深厚的感情。就连飞到船尾的小鸟,圣地亚哥也是怜爱有加“你几岁啦?”“你是第一次出门吗”等,这些呢喃之语都表现出了圣地亚哥是个友善的渔人。

(二)与大自然——拥抱自然却又不懈抗争

拥抱自然又与自然进行抗争,这在圣地亚哥的性格中有完美的体现。在大海上,凭借星辰和月亮判断天气,凭借海上的生物判读鱼群所在位置。这一切就好像大自然是已是他的老朋友,圣地亚哥已与大自然融为了一体。圣地亚哥出海84天却一无所获,但他仍然坚持着自己的信念。在钓到大鱼后,却又在返航途中失去它。他以超乎常人般的毅力抵住了84天无功而返的困苦以及第85天遭受的鲨鱼袭击。此刻,为了生存,圣地亚哥必须与大自然抗争,这时候的他与自然是对立的,与自然的万物是平等的。这一切的一切更体现了圣地亚哥坚忍不拔、不懈抗争的精神。

(三)独有的自我沟通方式与丰富细腻的内心世界

圣地亚哥在出航时往往是独自一人,他常常以自言自语的方式进行自我沟通。尤其是在圣地亚哥遭受饥饿、体力下降、鲨鱼袭击等种种困难时,不断的自言自语为自己树立精神支柱,这已成为了其独有的沟通方式。虽然圣地亚哥是独自一人,可是仍然拥有丰富的内心世界。为了生存,必须要靠捕鱼取得收入,在海上圣地亚哥也非常希望曼诺林能够在自己的身边帮助自己,同时也分享自己钓到大鱼的喜悦之情。这些都表现出了圣地亚哥同样拥有归属和爱的需要。小说展现圣地亚哥的内心世界充满了张力,他内心丰富,敏感、细腻,不仅具有钢铁般的意志更有硬汉少见的柔情。

Santiago was alone. Mandolin can not go to sea with him because of his parents. He catches fishes alone. He fights with sharks alone. He can talk to nobody except himself. No one will help him.

But even though he faced hungry; weary and difficulty alone, he does not give up.

Somebody said Santiago was a failure. Because at last he said he wishes that it had been a dream and the boy cried for him can really approve it.

In this way I think Santiago was a lucky person. Because he still had Mandolin. The boy loved him and pitied him. If Mandolin had no money his own, he begged or stole to make sure that Santiago had enough to eat and fresh baits for his lines. The old man accepts his kindness with humility that was like a quiet kind of pride.

The the old man and the seais a brief but meaningful story. After fishing nothing during the past 84 days, the old fisherman San Diego finally captured a salmon, which weight is over 1500 pounds. After a tough struggle, exactly, three days’ standoff, the old man eventually killed the big fish that came to surface because of being exhausted. However, on the way to harbor, the old man was attacked by many sharks who tracked after the smell of the dead salmon, what he still hold was only the bone of the big fish when he arrived at port.

It is said that the author, Ernest Hemingway who is a great American writer wrote the novel in only eight weeks, basing on one of his friend’s true experience. He created the figure of the old man which was later called by people “tough man” and showed his life attitude and spiritual world. The most well-known sentence of this novel and also the topic of it is that: “man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” These words become belief of many readers.

In my opinion, the whole story is about a battle between an old man and the sea, both of which are considered to have symbolic meanings according to critics. The old man once was so energetic and strong but couldn’t get harvest from the sea. He used his old body and strong mind to fight against nature and challenge his fate. He did win a bit―he got the large fish, but he lost totally because he carried back only the skeleton of the fish with his hands bleeding. On the other hand, he had done all he could to fight against all unlucky things and didn’t lose his face. He behaved like a real man, a tough man.

It’s a tragic novel, but it’s also a heroic symphony. The poor old fisherman was regarded as a failure by other fishers as he had captured nothing during the past 84 days. When he fished that 1500-pound salmon, he determined to fight to death even though he knew clearly that the big fish was much stronger than him, and finally, he succeeded. But the ordeal was not to the end even he had succeeded in capturing the big fish. The salmon was bigger than his fishing-boat, he dad no choices but binding the fish to one side of his boat. During his way home, the dead salmon was attacked again and again by shakes followed after the smell of blood. He had to do everything he could do to protect his victory. Harpoon was taken away by a shark, he tied the knife on the oar to stick the shake; the knife was broken, he used short stick to fight against the shark; the short stick was lost, he fought with rudder・・・Nothing could destroy his volition though the fish was eaten by sharks. God seems to have no pity toward such a great old man; he dropped misfortunes on this poor old man time and time again. But the old San Diego never gave in.

The old man’s story is not only a symbol of the relationship between human and nature, but also a symbol of the indestructible spirit of human. In reality, the old man was defeated, but in spirit, he was a winner. The spirit of tenacious fight of him suggested the dignity and perseverance of human people. Even a great successful person has some experience of frustration. There are various reasons of being failed, but even an insignificant failure is an unbearable strike. Going to sea, he would gain another hope of being successful. Maybe, the sinister life environment and the tenacity of life attitude is the reason that this composition is more and more attractive. Life itself is a kind of endless pursuit, just like the old man’s saying“human is not born to be failure, one could be ruined, but he could not be defeated.” These words remind me of the “Destiny symphony“, in which Beethoven says that “I could be destroyed, but I couldn’t be conquered”。 They indicate the meaning of a hero, the meaning of life. Also, it’s what this story wants to tell people: human should face the failure bravely. From this respect, this book is not an allegory or a fairy tale, but a realistic works. The 《the old man and the sea》gives me a lot of revelation. What is failure? Failure is the bravery to get up the courage to climb up when you fell down and to get the courage to climb up again when you fell again and never lose the hope of life and the dream of life. What is hero? 《老人与海》讲述了一个老人捕鱼的故事。这个老人独自摇着小船在墨西哥湾的暖流里打鱼。已经八十四天了,他什么也没得到,连一条小鱼也没钓到。前四十天里,有个男孩和他一起钓鱼,帮助他,可他们还是天天空手而归,于是,小男孩的父母就不再让她跟着老爷爷了。第八十五天,老人把船划出去好远,他幸运的遇到一条大鱼。老人钩住了这条大鱼,却被大鱼带出去好远,不但要拉住绳子,还是提防它沉下去。最后,老人终于把这条大鱼抓住了。可是,老人在回来的途中,遇到了很多的不幸,他一而再,再而三地遇到鲨鱼,他一一地与它们做斗争,那些鲨鱼都被他杀死了,可是,大鱼也被吃掉了一半。最后,一大圈鲨鱼朝他游来,老人使出浑身解数和鲨鱼搏斗,鲨鱼把能吃的肉都吃完了,连头上也不剩一点肉,干干净净的。结果老人拖回去的只是一副大鱼骨架。但老人没有遗憾。

老人有许多精神值得我们学习。特别是他的乐观,坚持让我一直佩服,在书中,老人一直是以乐观的态度面对一切。在他一直到第八十四天还没有打到鱼的时,他并没有放弃而是继续打鱼,他始终相信自己会打鱼,并且,最后他只拖回来一副鱼骨,但他也没有遗憾。这就是真正的乐观。老人没有被任何困难压服,他尽自己的努力与生活中的磨难做不屈不挠的斗争。他说:“一个人并不是生来就要给打败,他可以消灭你,却不能被他打败。”这种永不言败的精神也感动并激励着我们每一个人。
