The most profound thing I have found when studying Drama is that we can become any person in the entire world, and still be us

I have always had a love for the performing arts since I can remember; for there has never really been anything else I have ever wanted to do apart from act. But acting is not just a subject to study people, narratives or social issues – we can discover so many things about ourselves, why we perform a character this way: is it because this person is so much like us? There have been numerous qualities I have discovered about myself while participating in drama. In teaching, I have learn how to really connect with people and help them to explorer what their feelings produce and more notably, how we learn about others, about a single person just by the way they say a monologue

Teaching has been a great experience for me because it has given me the time to evaluate my own performance and teaching skill, learning to become that character just a little but more. This has also been enhanced by the performances I have taken part in, learning to work together in teams to realise the dream of the narration and the vision of the director (for nothing really exists without the vision or image)

While experiencing other aspects of the Performing Arts, I have found that is has increased my performance skill on whole and expended my knowledge on the performance world greatly, Dance, Art and English all focusing on similar issues such as the Commedia dell’arte, Henrik Ibsen, Physical Theatre and Movements and philosophies. These subjects have greatly complemented my time in Drama, and increased my confidence and ability in being a performer. Being involved in 5 consecutive school productions, 2 amateur productions, teaching experience and a student has really influence me concerning the determination I will put into a career in Drama and Acting, and just working with these people and directors have really bettered me in the way I act, see myself and carry on with my life. The Performing Arts is such a brilliant profession to work in, because there is so much opportunity to explore the world

I know that I can offer the performing arts the time, the expense and the spark that it deserves. There is nothing else in world that I would devote more time to than being on the stage or acting in the street, and with the passion and determination to succeed behind me, I will give that spark and flavour that acting and the performing arts is all about. I know I can offer so much, because it is the only profession where, maybe just for one night, I can become someone else and do a damn good job of being that person – and I can easily say that I can offer the world, because performance and acting is my whole world. As well as enjoying Drama, I have also taken a shine to Philosophy and finding the reason for irrationality, and I feel particularly moved in amazement by the work of Bob Fosse and George Orwell for their use of horror, sorrow and murder. And a great interest to the History of Art, because so much of the story of us is portrayed in Art and more so these days it is so unique how Art and Drama work together to produce movement, beauty and conception.

误区一:对考试时间的误解

申请者常常对最后一次能用于申请的TOEFL和SAT考试时间存在误解。美国学校申请的截止日期并不是最后的TOEFL和SAT考试时间。举例来说,申请2009年9月入学的正常录取(Regular Decision)的申请截止日期大部分学校是2009年1月1日,最后一次参加TOEFL考试的时间是2009年1月。很多人认为考2009年1月的TOEFL会赶不上申请,原因是考试成绩一般要在3周以后出来,也就是2月初出来,早就超过了申请的截止日期。其实,申请人要做的是在学校申请的截止日期前把除TOEFL成绩之外的其他材料全部寄出;TOEFL分数可以稍后寄到学校,但必须在学校评审申请人的申请材料之前寄到。我们知道,正常发录取通知的时间通常是4月初,所以1月的TOEFL成绩在2月出来是可以赶上申请的。

至于SAT,由于它一般只需要2周就能出成绩,所以最后的考试时间也可以晚一点。2009年1月参加考试是可以的;虽然2月初参加SAT考试也勉强可以,但2月一般没有SAT考试了。尽管如此,我们还是建议申请人尽可能早点完成TOEFL和SAT考试,不要等到最后一刻。

误区二:对考试分数的误解

申请者容易对GPA(在校平均分数)、TOEFL和SAT考试分数产生误解。第一类误解是受国内教育体制的误导,认为如果要上美国名校,自己的学习成绩一定要是最好的。事实上,美国大学的录取,尤其是本科生的录取,是一个综合实力的竞争。即使在高中排名100多名或中等的学生也可以被顶尖名校录取。

第二类误解是对TOEFL分数的误解。一些申请者认为TOEFL必须达620分以上才可能被名校录取,而拿奖学金必须达到640分以上。这其实并不准确。哈佛、麻省理工、耶鲁录取的中国学生中有些TOEFL分数刚刚过了600分,甚至还有低于600分的。的确有些学校对申请者的TOFEL分数有要求,但这些美国顶尖名校的录取政策其实非常灵活,对于优秀的学生可以不受某些录取要求的限制,甚至在没有TOEFL分数的情况下也可以录取。

第三类是对SAT的误解,很多人把它等同于国内的高考录取分数线。比如有一位女孩SAT得了2 090分,她仍然想再花费大量的时间和精力去重考SAT,争取达到2 100分以上。这就是一个非常没有必要的行为,10分的差距不会对她的申请有任何负面影响,倒不如把精力和时间花费在对Essay的斟酌上。

误区三:申请定位不合理

有一类申请者对排名有一种盲目依赖和崇拜,非要申请前10或者前30~50的学校,而完全不顾自己综合实力的强弱。美国的大学本科教育是一种通识性的素质教育,因此不同学校的教学质量并不存在像排名显示的那种差距。在美国3 000多所大学中,我认为前100都是非常好的学校,前500的学校都是不错的学校,不同申请者要根据自己的综合实力合理选校,争取能够到自己能去的最好学校。

还有一类申请者,一开始就钻进了牛角尖,有严重的名校情节,比如“哈佛情节”或“常青藤情节”,非哈佛不去、非常青藤学校不去,否则就留在国内读大学。申请成功了固然值得祝贺,但万一去不成常春藤学校就留在国内读大学恐怕也不是一个明智的选择。我鼓励大家去美国读本科,是因为我认为美国大学的本科教育相对于国内目前的本科教育而言,更能开发一个人的才华和潜能,对学生本人的人生有着更积极的影响。

误区四:对University和College的误解

除了综合性大学(University)之外,美国还有大量的文理学院(College)。一些申请者认为学院肯定不如大学好,对这些文理学院看不上眼。殊不知,文理学院的教育并不逊色于综合性大学。文理学院往往以小班特色教学为主,平均一个班的人数在10人左右,老师和学生之间的交流和沟通远胜于综合性大学。一些好的文理学院,如威廉姆斯学院(Williams College)和韦尔斯利学院(Wellesley College)的本科教育在很多美国人的心目中比哈佛、耶鲁还要好。

误区五:对选择推荐人的误解

很多申请者花费大量精力去找名人来给自己写推荐信,但对申请者不了解的名人是不适合作为推荐人的。通常学校要求一份学校成绩报告单(School Report),这相当于校方给你的一个评价,可以找校长、升学顾问(国内中学一般没有这个职位)、年级组长甚至是班主任来担任;此外还要求两份教师评价表(Teacher Evaluation),通常是两位任课老师对你的评价。很多成功的申请者并没有名人的推荐。名人的推荐可以作为补充,但决不是必

需的。

误区六:错误地选择参照对象

这类申请者通常了解到一些成功获得美国名校录取的学生的各种分数,然后基于此得出一个片面的乐观或悲观的理解。比如,申请者知道某个被哈佛录取的学生的排名是2%,TOEFL是630分,就认为自己排名1%且TOEFL为640分一定也可以被哈佛录取。还有的人听说某个去了耶鲁的学生TOEFL成绩有650分而自己只有630分就不敢申请了。单纯对比两个学生的分数是片面的,必须比较各方面的综合实力才可以。可遗憾的是,这种录取委员会用来作为录取标准的综合能力很难被精确量化,你在没有看到一个成功申请者的全套申请材料(尤其是Essay)之前,是不能轻易断定你比这位申请者强或弱的。

误区七:Essay撰写的误区

对于Essay的写作,平庸自然不行,因而很多申请者会引用精彩的中国典故或传奇人物故事。但由于文化背景的差异,这会导致他人理解的困难,因此表述能力不强的申请者此时需要慎重对待。比如,曾经有一位申请者想用陶渊明的诗句“水不在深,有龙则灵”来介绍中国的龙,而英文的龙(Dragon)在西方神话中是一种邪恶并令人畏惧的动物。因此,他必须克服极大的文化差异,向录取委员们介绍中国龙。这是有较大风险的。此外,还有一些申请者有非常奇妙的想法,可是如果奇妙到一般人难以明白就不妙了。

误区八:家长过度参与

家长们对孩子的关爱是可以理解的。但我认为有些家长的参与超出了应有的度,剥夺了孩子锻炼自己的机会。比如留学咨询环节,通常会有家长全程代问,而孩子从不出场的情形。在留学咨询过程中,我们通常要了解申请者经历的很多事情的具体细节,包括申请者的感想、心得体会、遇到何种挑战以及最后如何成功、如何筹办一个活动,然后给出我们的建议和指导,这些东西家长是说不出来的,即使能说出来,也不是一个高中生那个年龄的人所拥有的想法。因此,家长们要借此机会锻炼自己的孩子,培养孩子的独立能力。学生是否具有独立精神、能否适应学校紧张而有压力的一年级生活,也是各校在录取学生时考虑的因素。

误区九:放弃高考

美国的大学不要求高考成绩,如果出国成行,放弃高考也没有关系。但加拿大部分大学要求学生的高考成绩,所以,如果你申请此类加拿大大学,就不能放弃高考。由于美国本科阶段提供给国际学生的奖学金很少,所以对于那些依赖于奖学金的申请者而言,出国的计划有可能实现不了,因此不要轻易放弃高考。即使对于能够自费的申请者而言,在申请成功之后还需要获得签证才能实现留学梦想,而签证也存在着一定程度的不可预期性。因此,无论是否放弃高考,都必须拥有坚强的心理素质,以承受不可知因素导致签证失败带来的冲击。

误区十:对自费签证的误解

很多人认为,拿不到奖学金的话,签证就拿不到。这是不正确的。如果家庭资金充足,那么你只需要说服签证官你的这笔教育投资是合理并有高回报的,然后你的签证难度就与获得全额奖学金的签证申请人一样——说服签证官你没有移民倾向,你此行的目的仅仅是学习并且会在学习结束后回到中国来。

误区十一:走速成路径

申请者常常想走速成路径——不考托福直接去美国读语言。有人认为这是一种留学的捷径,可以免除准备托福的时间而直接去留学了。殊不知,这只是把学习英语的任务推迟到出国以后。没有一定的英语基础是不可能完成美国的大学学习的,因此肯定要先进行语言的学习,在国外往往要学习半年甚至一两年英语,因此等到出国后学英语并不一定“节省”时间。此举有一个优点,就是可以在英语环境下学习英语。但是却有一个隐患和三个缺点。隐患就是在英语能力低下的前提下,学生如何学习和独立生活可能是个问题,如果不能适应的话可能会造成很大不便甚至发生悲剧。缺点一,在美国学习语言的费用相对于国内来说是相当昂贵的。缺点二,签证通过率降低。尽管《赖斯法》提及签证官在审查学生签证时不应歧视去读语言的学生、去读排名靠后的学校的学生,但可以肯定地讲,去读语言的签证通过率一定是小于去读正式大学课程的签证通过率。缺点三,由于此类学生常常是读完语言之后就读一所不太知名的美国大学,因此学生本人失去了登上更高人生起点的机会。美国的用人单位是非常势利的,他们聘请人员的时候要看学生的毕业院校的好坏,给予的起薪也会根据专业和学校来确定高低,因此一个名校出身的学生在职业道路上一开始就领先于非名校出身的学生。虽然我不推崇甚至有时候反对极端的名校情节,但是如果自己有能力上名校而不去努力甚至直接放弃,就是对自己前途的极端不负责。

误区十二:对面试机会的误解

有学生及其家长曾欣喜若狂地告诉我,他受到了普林斯顿大学和耶鲁大学的额外青睐,因为他获得了这两所学校的面试机会。其实,有些学校在一些大城市比如北京上海会有自己的校友,他们就会安排校友来面试申请人,只要有可能,这些学校就会争取面试每一个申请者,因此收到他们的面试通知决不表示该学校对你青睐有加。即便是该学校有面试而你不能参加、或者你所在地没有该校校友提供面试机会,那么也不会对你的申请有影响。(学校以及校友都会这么说,但是真实情形应该是这样的:面试表现好的同学参加面试会得到一份较好的面试报告,面试表现差的同学会得到一份较差的面试报告。面试好的同学不一定有机会被录取。我们曾有数位学生在普林斯顿校友面试后认为自己会被普林斯顿录取,因为面试人说如果她是录取委员就会马上录取该学生,但最后还是没有被普林斯顿录取。面试差的学生大部分情形下就会失去录取机会,原因是好的申请人太多,实力太接近而无法取舍,那面试结果差的就容易被淘汰掉。)目前,美国的大部分大学在中国并不能提供面试机会,往往不需要面试就直接录取学生。

误区十三:

考试准备时间过多、课外活动准备不足

申请者往往会花很多时间准备TOEFL和SAT考试,但是几乎不准备课外活动。有一部分学生有一种叛逆心态,认为做这个活动就是作秀,不屑于去做。我要说的是,美国大学申请其实就是一个作秀,你把实力秀出来,美国大学认可了才能录取你。时间方面,很多学生宁可准备一年半年去考TOEFL、SAT,可是对活动连一星期都不愿意抽出来。但事实上,在考英语和活动准备方面,投入的时间精力严重不对称这就是误区。如果你把180天的英语学习时间缩短到170天,TOEFL成绩几乎不会下降,但如果你用节省出的这10天去做一个有意义的课外活动,在这方面实力就会增加很多,想一想看怎样做更值得呢?

I have always enjoyed and achieved highly in science and maths. I alsoappreciate problem solving and the feeling of achievement associated with thepractical use of design and technology, which I studied to GCSE level.Throughout the course I worked with materials including plastics, woods, andmetals and designed and built various items including a table lamp and apropagator for germinating seeds.

I have been involved in various projects with my father, including erectinga pergola, a wooden shed and building a large brick shed at the bottom of thegarden. I also constructed a wooden chicken coop to my own design. Theseprojects have given me an insight into dealing with building regulations and theneed for planning, design and accurate measurement. I have gained experience inthe use of building materials, taking both cost and physical properties intoaccount.

People once asked me: “Why did you choose architecture?” I couldn’t give asimple answer for that. Maybe it was because I like painting and constructionsince childhood. I also earnestly yearn to create beautiful things on my own andarchitecture can satisfy my imagination in space, materials, and color. My borninterest in this sector is also because of my parents, who are both structuralengineer and electrical engineer, influencing me gradually and unconsciouslysince I was a kid and giving me perceptual knowledge in the field. After myfive-year study in the Department of Architecture, and one-year work experiencein architectural design, I ask myself this same question. The result is thataside from the factors mentioned above, what really makes me choose architectureis its intrinsic appeal, which is just like the maxim written inside thebuilding of the Department of Architecture: “Architecture is the combination ofart and technology.”

Perhaps when a person is engaged in what his keen interest blossoms, hewill never feel tired, instead he would feel motivated and have an enrichingexperience. Five years‘ academic study in the School of Architecture and Arts ofUniversity of X transformed my instinctive excitement and imagination aboutarchitecture into systematic knowledge and comprehensive understanding. Thistransformation, first of all, lies in my skills in the fine arts. Differing frommy previous mere interest in fine arts, the study of architecture makes me beginto ponder on how to draw using aesthetic elements from fine arts such as color,lighting and composition to apply to architecture. I was so dedicated to suchbrainstorming and imagination that I would always work around the clock in thestudio for days on end. Because of my childhood architectural background, coupled with my lastingkeen interest in architecture, I gained excellent achievements in the majorcourses of my college study, ranked top three in the class, and also receivedfirst prize scholarships and many other scholarships for five consecutive years.Besides, owing to my understanding of architecture, I am not satisfied with meretextbook knowledge. I believe architecture is not only a skill but also, moreimportantly, a combination of creativity and imagination. An excellentarchitecture designer needs not only solid architectural skills and knowledge,but also needs nourishment from fine arts, materials science, engineering andculture. For that purpose, I read quite extensively, understood thearchitectural history of different countries - especially European architecturalhistory, learnt from works of modern and contemporary architecturalmasterpieces, and gained insights on their design conceptions that are full ofcreativity and connotation. The knowledge I have gained from these effortsheightens my interests and my desire for creation.

I had the opportunity to put to practice this desire for creation duringthe last stage of my college study. During the second semester of my fourthyear, I interned with X for half a year where I participated in theenvironmental design of the X astronomical station and the conceptual design ofthe Phoenix Residential Complex in X. These experiences gave me insights intothe relationship between a building‘s space and its functionality, as well asarchitectural design‘s feasibility, which is an important factor to considerwhen designing.

After graduating in 20xx, I worked with an excellent architectural designinstitute, engaging in architectural design. In the meantime, I participated inthe conceptual design and design drafts of the janitor’s room, the main machinehall of X Company Ltd. I was also responsible for the design of the drafts ofthe multi-purpose hall in X , X and the renovation design of the X Archivesof the X. Because of my prominent achievements, I was quickly promoted as anexception from draftsmen to designer, and I later got the assistant engineercertificate in a short period of time.

The design experiences from these projects made me very interested increatively applying materials in projects. Meanwhile, I also continuouslylearned new ideas in architecture from different countries, and especially saw alot of design drawings of overseas architectural masters. All these experienceshave a great impact on me, sparking my intention of studying abroad to learnmore in-depth contemporary international architectural conceptions. I especiallyaspire to get to know in more detail modern western architectural history in thehopes of forming my own architectural conceptions.

Besides this, another intense desire of mine is to comprehensively learnthe relationship between architecture and culture, and through the study ofwestern architecture, to determine China‘s own architectural style. China onceboasted of a developed ancient architecture, while its modern architecture losesthe characteristics of its indigenous culture, a great deal of architecturelingers merely on the stage of rough and superficial imitation of westernarchitecture. I hope to form a sort of architectural design conception withcharacteristics of China‘s traditional culture after extensively absorbingmodern architectural theories and technologies. That is what I yearn to do andalso what I believe I can make.
